Common Signs of Housing Discrimination

Housing discrimination is unfair treatment based on prejudice.

It is illegal to:

  • Deny available housing
  • Set different negotiation terms
  • Deny or alter the provisions of mortgage loans or homeowners insurance

On the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, familial status, marital status, age, disability, military service, or sexual orientation.

Housing discrimination can sound like:

  • “No disability, we only rent to working people”
  • “We aren’t set up for children”
  • “Your credit isn’t good enough”
  • “A boy and a girl can’t share a bedroom”
  • “We must have lost your application”
  • “There’s a lot of traffic. It isn’t safe for kids”
  • “You might feel more comfortable in another neighborhood”
  • “Quiet, clean professionals preferred”
  • “You can’t build a ramp for access to the building – it won’t look good”
