Cases
Erie insurance case: HUD has issued probable cause determinations
against Erie insurance in both the Fair Housing Council's complaint and in HUD's own
Secretary-initiated complaint for alleged violations of the Fair Housing
Act based on the company's denial of insurance to homes located
in primarily minority neighborhoods. Suit was filed with
the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). HUD
subsequently filed a Secretary initiated complaint--a rare
occurrence. The case will now be brought by the United States against Erie, with
the Fair Housing Council intervening.
Saddle Club case: The FHCCNY settled a lawsuit
with Saddle Club Townhomes for violation of the Fair Housing Act.
Saddle Club had ordered all children's toys including swing sets,
sand boxes, and basketball hoops be removed from the property.
Then leases for families with children were not being renewed. The FHCCNY brought the case under familial status protection offered
by the Fair Housing Act and settled with the complex for $110,000.
Moraine Manor Trailer Park case: The NYS Division of Human
Rights issued a probable cause determination in this case alleging discrimination against
families with children in a Cayuga County mobile home park.
